Our accommodation in Leon was the Hostal San Marcos, founded in the 12th century as a monastery to lodge travellers on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The present building was begun in 1513 as the headquarters of the Knights of Santiago, and is heavily ornamented with scallop shells, the symbol of the medieval pilgrimage.
