Hippopotamus

It's unusual to see hippo out of the water during the day because their delicate skin can't really take the hot afternoon sun, but one morning in Serengeti we were out at dawn and got lucky enough to see some that had come ashore at night to graze and were heading back to the water.


These photos were taken at the Retima hippo pools in Serengeti, where hundreds of them fill the water:

The males are constantly displaying to see who's the toughest.
