The largest shopping center in Russia, it's completely enclosed in this wonderful neo-Russian style building with glass-roofed arcades, cafes, fountains, bridges and lanterns. The intials GUM used to stand for the Russian words for Government Department Store, but it's now a joint stock company and the intials stand for Glavny Universalny Magazine (Main Department Store). Built in 1893 to replace a market destroyed by one of Napoleon's fires in 1812, it has now been completely renovated and includes the usual high-end shops, such as Armani.
