Sundown on the Svir River
Kizhi Island, at the northeast end of Lake Onega. In 1478, Ivan the Great annexed this area and began exacting taxation on the area, with its fertile soil and abundance of game and fish. A century later, thirteen villages and two churches stood on the island. At various times subsequently, it's been at the mercy of Poles,Lithuanians, and Swedes. Peter the Greet recruited peasants from the area to help put an end to the Swedish threat once and for all.
