Varanasi, formerly Benares, is one of the oldest city in India located on its holiest river, the Ganges. It is believed that those who die and are cremated here and their ashes committed to the Ganges can avoid the endless cycle of rebirth. Funeral pyres burn 24 hours a day on the banks of the river.
