We rose at 5:30 a.m. to greet the dawn on the Ganges, but the dawn did not return the favor, alas.

But at least you finally get to meet our terrific guide, Prabhu Singh Bhati, bargainer extraordinaire!

Sarnath, where Buddha preached his first sermon after enlightenment and the first Buddhist monastery was established, is one of the four holy sites of Buddhism. Now in ruins, there is a still a huge stupa here with the oddest mix of geometric and baroque floral carvings on it, plus a huge circular temple platform.
