Sarnath, where Buddha preached his first sermon after enlightenment and the first Buddhist monastery was established, is one of the four holy sites of Buddhism. Now in ruins, there is a still a huge stupa here with the oddest mix of geometric and baroque floral carvings on it, plus a huge circular temple platform.
