The point of heading to Tozeur is to take the old narrow-gauge Lezard Rouge (red lizard) train, once the property of the Bey of Tunis, through the Seldja Gorge, a lovely scenic trip in a wonderful old train with inlaid wood paneling and anaglypta ceilings, a bit seedy, but charmingly so. The Gorge is spectacular, very narrow in parts with many long tunnels. There were two stops for photos on the way to the end, which is where phosphate mining is done on a large scale (no doubt the only reason the tracks are maintained). That part was pretty ugly.
