San Gennaro crypt

The relics of San Gennaro, patron saint of Naples, languish in a beautiful crypt under the Cathedral’s altar. Marble is lavishly used in the crypt, with an inlaid floor of colored marbles and delicately carved panels on the walls, all presided over by a statue of the bishop who “retrieved” them from a rival town.

The small chapel of St. Mary of the Standard has a gorgeous 1322 mosaic depicting Mary, Christ and Sts. Restituta and Gennaro.
