Cappadocia - underground

The area is riddled with tunnels that form underground cities where the local population could ride out the conflicts and religious persecution. It's hard to get much of an idea of what they're like from photos, but here are a few of the Özkonak underground city. It's difficult to make out, but the large round stone in the first photo is a door, to be rolled to the left to keep out any undesirables who might be lurking in the passage beyond:
