Comillas and San Vincent de la Barquera

Wending our way westward out of Santilla del Mar, we passed through some pretty countryside in deteriorating weather.

The attraction in Comillas is the 1881-82 Palacio de Sobrellano, with a commanding view across to the university

I love this detail

And of course it has its own chapel

But the real pièce de résistance, for me at least, was one of the few buildings Antoni Gaudí built outside of Barcelona, the fanciful El Capricio, built in 1883 as a summer home for Máximo Díaz de Quijano. Sort of looks like Legos on acid, don't you think?

By the time we reached San Vincent de la Barquera, the rain was bucketing down and none of us felt like hiking up the hill to the castle, so we crossed the bridge to a lookout point and took a photo of the church of Santa Maria de los Angeles
